Automated passport control
Automated passport control gates are now available for use by passengers at Zurich Airport. This facilitates an efficient and rapid border check.
Thanks to biometric data stored on passports, passengers can cross the Schengen border without third-party intervention.
Passengers who would like to use an automated passport control gate must fulfil the following conditions:
- At least 18 years old
- Biometric passport/e-passport (not an ID card)
- Citizen of Switzerland or an EU/EEA country
The automated passport control at Zurich Airport is voluntary for passengers. The staffed passport counters can still be used with no restrictions.
Automated passport control: the procedure in detail
Place your biometric passport on the passport reader at the security gate and wait until the document's validity has been checked and the entrance door opens.
When you set foot in the security gate, a biometric comparison is made between a picture of your face (live recording) and the electronic photo stored in your e-passport. At the same time as the biometric facial verification, your personal data will be checked against the passport data.
Once the check has been completed successfully, the exit door opens and you leave the security gate. If the check indicates any irregularity or if further clarification is required, a manual inspection is done. Once you have left the security gate, the biometric data collected during the check are deleted immediately.
